Andreas Weck: The performance debate, AI job anxiety & what remains of New Work

narrative now by getpress

Do we need to work harder again – or just talk about work differently?

In this episode of narrative now, host Max speaks with Andreas Weck: freelance journalist, speaker, and consultant, former head of the working world department at t3n, former Silicon Valley correspondent, LinkedIn Top Voice in the DACH region, and a long-time observer of the New Work debate. For years, Andreas has followed how companies have talked about meaning, flexibility, self-determination, and purpose – and since becoming self-employed, he has experienced firsthand how work can be reorganized.

Together, Max and Andreas discuss the new debate on performance: return-to-office mandates, layoffs, cost pressure, more authoritarian leadership, and political statements about whether work-life balance and the four-day work week are endangering prosperity. Andreas explains why some New Work promises sound hollow today – and why modern forms of work are not simply going to disappear. After all, the shortage of skilled workers, gaps in childcare, high part-time employment rates, and new realities of life cannot be communicated away with a simple "just work more."

Naturally, the conversation also covers AI and the widespread fear of job loss: is the AI job apocalypse really coming? Andreas disagrees with the narrative of mass unemployment and explains why jobs are more likely to change than disappear. Max and Andreas discuss why tech companies often use AI to justify layoffs, why communications roles in the AI industry are suddenly in high demand, and what all of this reveals about the new narrative of work.

In a nutshell

  • New Work: A Reality Check For a long time, New Work was the communicative promise of modern employers: meaning, flexibility, self-determination, and purpose. Now, return-to-office mandates, cost pressure, and layoffs are showing which companies are truly serious about their culture – and which were just using employer branding buzzwords.
  • Performance is back on the agenda Politics, business, and the media are talking about work in tougher terms again: work-life balance, the four-day work week, prosperity, and productivity. Andreas explains why "working more" is an inadequate response – and why companies need to explain more credibly what performance actually means today.
  • New Work does not mean working less Modern forms of work and high performance are not mutually exclusive. Andreas describes why flexibility, better childcare, new working time models, and more self-determination are not the opposite of productivity – but are often what enable people to do good work in the first place.
  • AI job anxiety requires better communication Is mass unemployment coming due to AI? Andreas is skeptical. He explains why jobs are changing, why new tasks are emerging – and why the "AI will replace everyone" narrative is often too simplistic. For companies, this means that transformation must be explained, not just asserted.
  • Tech layoffs and AI narratives Many tech companies are citing AI and efficiency as reasons for job cuts. The conversation explores the message this sends to shareholders, employees, and the public – and why, for this very reason, communication has suddenly become one of the hottest jobs in the AI industry.
  • Journalism between crisis and renaissance AI is also changing the craft of journalism: simple texts, data processing, research, and distribution. At the same time, trustworthy journalism is becoming more important as Google, ChatGPT, and others become new gatekeepers and more and more content is created synthetically.
