Team Thursday #2: Three Getpressis in an Interview

#

getpress Insights

Same same but different: We Getpressis share a vision — while also being a colorful bunch who don’t always agree. That can create friction, but even more so, it sparks fruitful exchange and creativity. And we love that. For today’s Team Thursday, we’re once again introducing three team members in an interview: Fiona, Linda, and Adriana.

Communications Lead, Junior Growth Manager, and PR Consultant / (Jr.) Team Lead — Fiona, Linda, and Adriana have some pretty cool job titles. And when you take a closer look, it becomes clear: all three play a key role in keeping things running, each in their own very different way. In the interview, they share their successes and lessons learned, fails and fuck-ups, and tell us which animal they’d be — hypothetically, of course. Spoiler: The three of them would also make a pretty nimble (and ridiculously cute) trio, and Rolf Zuckowski would write a song about it. They’ve also got some strong visions for the future; they know what the industry needs and what role they want to play in making it happen.

Read on.

Meet: Fiona Mussul

[she/her]

Role: Communications Lead

Your working style as an emoji: 🪄

Your hidden talent: Babies stop crying when they see me. 👶

Favorite lunch: Interesting vegetables (no boring salad)

getpress in three words: ahead of time ;)

Fiona, forget the title in your email signature for a moment. What would your role be called if it accurately reflected everything you do at getpress?

At OMR (where else), there was a booth for some kind of finance tool (or something — numbers aren’t exactly my strong suit) called “Fio,” with the slogan “made to do more.” That actually sums it up pretty well — in the best way possible. Because I’m always able and encouraged to do more and try new things.

What has been your biggest milestone at getpress so far?

It feels like there’s a new one every six months, hehe. But I’d say my biggest achievement is simply the journey I’ve been on here. From trainee to team lead. And all the personal growth I’ve been able to see in myself along the way. Pretty cool. 🙂

What was your biggest fail — and what did you learn from it?

I think the only times I’ve really failed were when I didn’t allow myself enough space, distraction, and free time outside of work. It negatively affects my productivity and only increases the pressure I put on myself. A stressful vicious cycle. My biggest lesson from the past two and a half years is really: Take time for yourself, learn to embrace your strengths and weaknesses equally, and be kind to yourself. And: Be transparent with others when something bothers you or when you’re up for something new. Nobody can read minds.

Looking ahead: What does the industry need right now, and what role do you want to play in that?

PR and journalism carry a lot of responsibility when it comes to topics like diversity, equity, and inclusion. Some people are more aware of this than others. I want to make a small difference here (“cringe,” some might say — oh well). I try to do that at getpress through thoughtful and mindful internal and external communication. At the end of the day, you usually have more influence than you think and can play a significant role in shaping discourse — whether that means giving topics like sustainability a platform or “just” taking a stance on things like gender-inclusive language.

Let’s say you at getpress were animals: Which one would you be, and why?

I’d be a little mouse. Always very alert, easily distracted, and of course, a little cute.

Meet: Linda Stratmann

[she/her]

Role: Junior Growth Manager

Your working style as an emoji: 🧩

Your hidden talent: Finding super-cute cafés in unfamiliar cities

Favorite lunch: Summer rolls

getpress in three words: collaborative – energetic – agile

Linda, forget the title in your email signature for a moment. What would your role be called if it accurately reflected everything you do at getpress?

Phew, that’s a good question. I think I’m the sales organization bee on duty, sticking my feelers into everything to optimize our sales processes and establish structures. My tasks are super varied. Some weeks, my calendar is packed with introductory calls with potential clients, while in others I’m more focused on back-office tasks, like creating workflows or analyzing data.

What has been your biggest milestone at getpress so far?

Not so easy to pin down. At getpress itself, it was definitely getting my first client commitments and clippings back when I was still working as a PR Werki, followed by the first projects I helped close in Sales. Personally, though, there was so much more happening behind the scenes. I think being promoted to my current position gave me a huge sense of trust and appreciation and showed me that there are great opportunities for professional development at getpress.

What was your biggest fail — and what did you learn from it?

I think it was when I implemented my first automations in the sales process. The workflow itself was a good idea — but when setting it up, I checked one little box that resulted in a few leads receiving the same marketing email twice within a very short period of time. Oops. It wasn’t actually that big of a deal, but I learned that while these things can make our day-to-day work easier, you always need to take a close look at what you’re actually automating. :)

Looking ahead: What does the industry need right now, and what role do you want to play in that?

I think especially now, with the start-up market being so unstable, it’s important to give companies a big platform through PR to showcase themselves. In my day-to-day sales work, I talk to so many fascinating people with great visions and innovative ideas. Far too few of them get heard or make themselves heard. Especially during my introductory calls, I want to show people the positive impact PR can have — particularly when you use the getpress method. ;)

Let’s say you at getpress were animals: Which one would you be, and why?

Definitely a badger. 🦡 I’ve played basketball since I was little, and my team back then was called the “Badgers” — and at getpress, we’re all team players, too. Plus, people used to say that badgers have no natural predators. I think that comes in pretty handy in Sales right now. :D

Meet: Adriana Hofer

[she/her]

Role: PR Consultant & Jr. Team Lead

Your working style as an emoji: 🐿️
Your hidden talent: I can sleep anytime, anywhere (including 12 hours straight on a plane)

Favorite lunch: Vegan udon noodle bowl 💚

getpress in three words: fast-paced (does that count as one?), respectful & fun

Adriana, forget the title in your email signature for a moment. What would your role be called if it accurately reflected everything you do at getpress?

Phew, that’s a really good question. If I had to answer it in GIFs, it would definitely be Kim Possible (call me, beep me 📞), the cat that’s constantly hammering away at its laptop keyboard (emails, emails, emails), and a meditating Buddha for those particularly stressful phases.

As a (Jr.) Team Lead for the Remmidemmis 🐿️, I’m also often the overenthusiastic mom on the sidelines, coaching and cheering on the team while also being a (hopefully empathetic) listener whenever things aren’t going so well or a Remmidemmi simply needs someone to talk to.

What has been your biggest milestone at getpress so far?

There isn’t really one huge milestone for me. It’s more about lots of little baby steps that have led to constant growth. Of course, I was absolutely thrilled when I was given the trust to lead a team. And I’m even happier when the team is motivated, happy, and achieving cool things.

What was your biggest fail — and what did you learn from it?

I’ve realized that I’m always front and center at our Fuck-Up Nights. 😅 So yes, quite a few things go wrong for me, too. Often, I have tons of to-dos piling up and want to get everything done quickly while still maintaining high quality. Little spoiler: that obviously doesn’t work. One time I sent out the wrong text, another time a journalist called back and I had no idea who they were, and as the grand finale, I once sent an email ending with “friendly feet.” Thanks to autocorrect — and praise be to Gmail’s undo-send function.

My takeaway: Take a quick breath, get everything done calmly, and double-check that everything is actually correct. Also: I’m allowed to say “no” sometimes.

Looking ahead: What does the industry need right now, and what role do you want to play in that?

Innovation: The media landscape is constantly changing, so we need to keep questioning and adapting the way we work, too. #challenger 🤓 Is this really still the best way to pitch? Could an AI-powered tool save me even more time? I think it’s incredibly important not to shut yourself off from new developments, but to actively engage with them and keep testing new ways of solving things.

Authenticity: I think transparent, honest, and open communication on equal footing is absolutely essential in PR when it comes to building strong, long-term relationships. That also means engaging with criticism and working on it. That’s why, when clients face critical questions from journalists, I always advise them to acknowledge the issues openly and honestly and explain how they plan to address them within a certain timeframe. I find that much more authentic than denying or even covering up the criticism.

Let’s say you at getpress were animals: Which one would you be, and why?

Definitely a squirrel. Not only because it’s our team mascot, but also because they’re small, cute animals that are often seen as lovable. At the same time, they’re energetic and quick when it comes to achieving their goals (collecting nuts / securing clippings 🤓). They can be a little clumsy, too, when they bury their nuts and then can’t find them again — I feel that.
